The year 2008 has the highly dubious distinction of shaping up as the worst calendar year recorded for Australian shares, with records going back to 1876.
The business world is in shock at the arrest last week of Bernard Madoff, the 70-year old former chairman of the Nasdaq Stock Market. Madoff is alledged to have presided over the biggest fraud in Wall Street history. Unfortunately these type incidents have been far from rare.
