News Corp boss Rupert Murdoch plans to charge people to read his newspapers’ websites within the next year.

It's a bold move designed to claw back some of the $4 billion in lost revenues – in a year that has been "the most difficult in recent history".

Murdoch is the world's most famous media mogul, but many people think he could be wrong to charge for general news stories online – any of which could be read elsewhere, for free.

Will Murdoch’s bold move work? Are you willing to pay to read the news online?

If you had to pay, would you expect special extras? Or would you look for a website offering the same for free?

Join the debate and have your say below. After all, it's free.

is already free on tv ..and radio every hour or more. so why pay????another idiotic idea to make a buck, but this is dead before lift off
I dont think so Murdoch. Gee your a big tool! Why pay for something on the internet that TV stations have been competing to get me to watch years before the internet existed. HAHAHAHAHAHAH. This has got to be a joke.
When Rupert Murdoch stops tinting his hair! I will be sure that I will be able to read it on NineMSN for free.
No I would not pay for online news. There are too many other sources for finding out the latest news. Mr. Murdoch should come back to the land of reality. If he is going to rely on this method to make a profit then I think he is going to be sadly mistaken.
NO WAY why pay for drivel when you can get it and more else where free,
I really enjoy reading my paper with my cup of tea, tucked up in bed of a morning........who wants a computer in bed!!
Nuh!! Not a chance!!!
Would I pay to read 'standard' news content ? Not on your life, when I can get it for free from ninemsn, or other reputed news organisations like Reuters (free to read, subscription to republish), the BBC et al. The mistake that Newscorp and Fairfax are making is to gamble that people will want to pay for 'mainstream' news. Sure - I'll pay for 'niche' content like an online subscription to 'New Scientist' or 'Choice Magazine', but not for basic 'bread and butter' news.
Why should we pay twice to read the news. As we already pay for the internet connection. Just another way to make money. Well they arent getting my money
Simple answer is I would not pay. A few years ago Baggy Green was asking for live cricket scores. People left in droves and it was free again. Why would you start paying when you haven't been for years ?? Ripp off Local Councils in Sydney start charging for previous free services but sadly they get away with it. I don't think news sites can follow suit unless they are unbelievably arrogant and or plain stupid.
