News that car sales have fallen by 20 percent in the past year has fuelled fears of job losses in Australia's car manufacturing industry, which employs more than 18,500 people.

Recent figures showed that nearly 53,000 Australians lost their jobs during February.

With the rate of unemployment predicted to climb to 9 percent by the end of next year, can anyone afford to feel safe in their job?

Do you think your job could be next in line for the chop?

Do you work in the car industry: are you worried about your job?

Have you, your friends, or any of your family members been made redundant recently?

Start reporting the Good news as well damn it Posted by Grumpy, Perth, on 19 03 2009 2 49 31 PM The good news is that Labour are the most experienced when it comes to spending the nations money. Yeh? These are some of the good points.. to mention. Australia will be better of than most parts of the world so bare that in mind. We know alot of other countries have invested interest in Australia and the wheels that keep turning will be Coal to name one. We all benefit from the Coal Industry whether it's Australian owned or not for it's the people who work amongst it that thrive and in turn inject into the economy. If the Greener side of Australia want to see a cleaner resource than coal, then they need to develop a suitable alternate and rise to the challenge in these changing times.
I'm with you all the way buddy!! We are forever being told that things will only pick up when confidence improves - well how the hell will confidence improve if doom and gloom are the only economic stories being put out there?!?! I'm sick of hearing about it too!! Yes the world is in a slump at the moment, yes unemployment is rising, yes sectors of the community will be struggling...but you don't have to RAM IT DOWN OUR DAMN THROATS EVERYDAY!! What possible good can raving on about the negatives do for us everyday working people?!? And, as grumpy said, using 'sensational' journalism practices using words like 'slashed', 'crisis' etc when things are not in fact that bad (well not yet anyway) just shows your true intentions MSN... to sell a story, not provide factual realistic news! Pffft...
I was made redundant from my job over 4 months ago and still can't find employment. I am told that it is very quiet but still have to ring prospective employers every 2 weeks because that's what I was told to do. My partner works full-time in the car industry, where he has been employed for over 20 years. Yes, we are worried, but surely not alone with a mortgage and bills to pay. To "kerri, Tasmania" I think the statistics refer to individuals who register with Centrelink, (Thus, rendering us the hidden unemployed.) Also wanted to suggest to you, to make an appointment with Centrelink to discuss circumstances. You have nothing to lose. I thought I wouldn't be eligible for assistance due to my partner's income and my redundancy pay, but I received a letter recently that I am eligible for assistance. Any little bit helps.
just look at how keating left the shop, bankrupt 98 billion in debt, now look as am example at NSW,,,,,,WHAT A LAUGH..........highest unemployment rate, every where you look poor decisions on every topic, hospitals=bankrupt, transport=rail project incompleted 20,roads and tunnels=bad contracts and user pays, cross city tunnel=failure, just about everything they touch turns to ***, why is it so hard for you morons to accept the facts, they are right there in front of you,or is it you were educated in a labour funded school and cant read, oh yeah so wasnt rudd suppose to have a computer for EVERY student rolled out.......sucked in again you fools.....funny thing is as a talk to people about our country and what we need to do, still to this day i havent come across more than 10 people who admitt to voting for these clowns....you left wing voters need to get up with the present, the old labour does not exit anymore, they died with bob hawke, time to look for better options, you pack of morons
I am a small business owner and i can tell you all that coupled with a crippling economy, with the new workplace legislation that this stupid government is forcing through, i will be letting many of my valued and salary dependant employees go as i cannot afford to pay them the kind of rates this useless goverment is mandating. why not ask employees what they would rather have. a few extra dollars for penalty rates, or keep their jobs!!! i know what i would choose!!!!!!!!!!!! More people unemployed because of Julia Gillard!!! I wonder if this stupid and ignorant idiot has ever owned a business ? Tax cuts for business would stimulate the economy more than $900 to individuals. Tax cuts would ensure that we keep our employees employed !!!!!!! I definitely DID NOT VOTE FOR THEM. they are killing small business and with it, working families.
I'm not worried about losing my job. Which explains why I waste time blogging on-line when I should be working. As to the government's solution- they should use their money to setup a new project which will improve infrastructure (maybe get a some river systems to flow the water from where there is too much to where there is not enough), which will give those who've lost their jobs employment, build our infrastructure for the future, help ensure our natural resources are more efficiently used and not waste money giving piddly amounts to people who are too scared to spend it anyway. Sounds like a much more foward thinking plan to me. Maybe I should be the next Prime Minister. Leave my own white collar job to argue with all the pollies and get as much done as I get done writing comments on the net...
yep!!! The only ones that are not are Politicians, and workers in essential services and Public Servants!!!

I also agree with "grumpy" that all this talk of doom and gloom is not helping. My brother is an economist and he said it's so easy to talk the economy down. He said people need to be fed positive info about how things could go, people get more faith in the market. As it is I do believe the media love doom and gloom stories... like the one i read recently that we could end up a third world counrty with everyone running around like ferals. What utter rot to write, people don't need to be depressed even more. I agree, nothing gets in the way of a good story though.
How can anyone straight out blame labour for the current situation? It's a proven fact that it was all going down hill long before they got into power. You'd have to be blind to not place any blame on our previous government. Having said that is either of our governments really responsible for the global situation? No. It's not just Australia, it's everywhere and Labour didn't do it.
