From Money Magazine, October 2005

An estimated 70 percent of Australians who die each year don’t have a will, or at least one that can be found. You may think this isn’t such a big deal but the fact is, if you die without a will, state law will decide who inherits your estate. Shock horror, this may turn out to be the last person you wished to benefit.

State Trustees Victoria, responsible for Good Will Week in Victoria, says even if you have made a will a common mistake is not updating it. "A will needs to be reviewed every two to three years or updated sooner if life circumstances change significantly (eg. marriage, divorce, birth of a baby)," says State Trustees Victoria.

And what’s the use of a will if it’s stuck away in the garage and can’t be found? Make sure you tell a few people where your will is located. Will Store offers a storage service and your will is stored in a fireproof safe.

To celebrate National Will Week, starting on October 10, Money has again teamed up with Will Store, a market leader in do-it-yourself last wills and testaments, to provide every reader with a free online WilPaC will.

WilPaC’s online will can be completed without a solicitor. However, if your requirements are more complicated or you are unsure of certain matters, you should consider expert advice. Each single WilPaC online usually retails for $25, but Money readers can access this online will absolutely free. WilPaC’s online site also provides a solicitor will option, under which wills are submitted to a WilPaC partner solicitor for review and advice. In this case an additional fixed fee applies but your $25 will be credited to this fee.
